As parents prepare to send their children back to school, Member for Burnett and Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Stephen Bennett is urging people to add an extra pencil case or notebook in the trolley to donate to families escaping domestic violence.
Mr Bennett said there were a number of families fleeing domestic violence who were being supported by local organisations.
“While this time of year is a happy occasion for most of us, sadly some families face a tough time and have little choice but to flee their home,” he said.
“Often these families escape with very little but the clothes on their back, so it can be difficult for victims of domestic and family violence to provide their children with back to school items in time for the first term.
“I am asking the community to spare a thought for families who are the victim of domestic violence and do their bit by making a small donation of school supplies like pencil cases and notebooks.”
