Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has welcomed the common sense decision to gift Bert Hinkler’s historic number plates to the Hinkler House Memorial Museum and Research Association.

Mr Bennett said while the state government should not have hesitated to gift the number plates in the first place, he is pleased to see common sense has prevailed.

“While I’m disappointed the Palaszczuk government dragged the chain on this important project and had to be forced into making such a sensible decision for the people of Bundaberg, I’m glad to finally see common sense prevail,” he said.

“This is a wonderful win for the dedicated volunteers who have been working around the clock to restore Bert Hinkler’s historical vehicle. It’s also a great win for the people of Bundaberg.

“Thousands of man hours have gone into restoring the vintage Armstrong Siddeley and these number plates truly are the icing on the cake for the volunteers working on the project.”

Hinkler House Memorial Museum and Research Association president Lex Rowland has welcomed the decision.

“To be issued with the processional plates is really special. It’s special for Bundaberg and it’s special for the Hall of Aviation too,” Mr Rowland said.

“There’s some priceless exhibits over there and this car is going to add to that exhibition we have, and it really belongs to the people of Bundaberg and the nation.

“It closes a chapter on a very historic set of number plates.”
