Local primary schools have been battling it out for the title of the ‘Cleanest Greenest School’, in Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett’s inaugural waste minimization project.

Mr Bennett has partnered with the Burnett Mary Regional Group, IMPACT and ABC Recycling to deliver the Cleaner Greener Schools program to schools during the month of May.

$2000 in prize money was up for grabs as well as trips to the IMPACT Recycling & Collections Centre and ABC Recycling’s Container Deposit Centre.

Bargara State School has taken home the Cleanest Greenest School crown with their clean beach initiative, nude food programs, beeswax wraps, native garden regeneration and reef guardian participation.

Burnett MP Stephen Bennett said it’s up to all of us, both young and old, to help maintain the balance within our pristine environment.

“We are very privileged to live in such a beautiful part of the world and we are also lucky that we have the knowledge and resources available to us to help sustain and improve our great environment and region into the future,” he said.

“I have been lucky to meet some incredible and remarkably intelligent young people within my electorate who are always coming up with new and innovative ideas to reduce, reuse and recycle.

“This sparked the idea behind the Cleaner Greener Schools Project that encourages the next generation to take the time in their daily life to think twice about their waste and product use.

“All participating schools have gone above and beyond in their waste minimization efforts this year, but there was one stand out; Bargara State School.

“The teachers and students place a lot of importance on caring for and protecting our local environment and there were definitely a lot of initiatives we can all get behind.’

Six local schools participated in this year’s project, each submitting a short summary covering how waste reduction and recycling promotion was completed by their school and what improvements were made, on the completion on the competition.
