Queenslanders are being asked to help bring a smile to the faces of more than 8,300 abused or neglected Queensland children living away from home this Christmas.

More than 250 gifts have already been donated towards the Kids in Care Christmas Appeal and Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett has urged people to embrace the Christmas spirit and donate a present.

Presents need to be suitable for a child aged 0 to 17 years. People can make their donation at their local Harvey Norman store at 125 Takalvan Street, Bundaberg.

“Christmas can be an emotional time for children living away from home and the reality of their situation can hit hard for some,” Mr Bennett said.

“However, receiving a gift can brighten their day and let them know that people really do care about them.

“Presents like gift cards, sporting equipment, board games, clothes and books can keep on giving during the Christmas holiday season.”

Mr Bennett praised ABC Local Radio in Queensland for getting behind the appeal and promoting it throughout the state.

“We are hoping the campaign will get a bumper response thanks to the wonderful support from ABC Local Radio,” he said.

“It’s great to see that gifts are already coming in and I thank people for their generosity.”

The appeal runs until 14 December.

Any surplus toys will be distributed to other children who are known to Child Safety.

People can visit www.communities.qld.gov.au/childsafety to find the location of their local centre or get more information on how to get involved.
