Toiletry care packs for children escaping domestic and family violence are being collected by the member for Burnett Stephen Bennett.
Mr Bennett called on the community to donate toiletry items which are being collected on behalf of the Red Heart Campaign to support victims of domestic violence and their families.
“Families escaping domestic violence often leave with little belongings, mostly just the clothes on their backs,” Mr Bennett said.
“This is our small way that we can show these families that our community cares and that victims of domestic violence are not alone.”
Mr Bennett, a White Ribbon Ambassador, said domestic violence statistics paint a frightening picture of how serious the issue is in Australia.
“On average at least one woman a week is killed by a partner or former partner in this country,” he said.
“Queensland accounted for a quarter of all domestic violence related deaths in Australia in 2016.
“In 2015-16 there were more than 22,000 domestic violence orders breached across the state – up 39 per cent from the year before.
“More than half of those women who experience violence have children in their care.”
Items such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, tissues and other necessary toiletry items can be dropped off to Mr Bennett’s electorate office in See Street, Bargara.
