Taxi drivers across the state have joined a special campaign to reach out and pay tribute to defence personnel.
Yellow Cab Co’s entire taxi fleet in Bundaberg, Brisbane and Rockhampton will display bumper stickers that pay special tribute to the veteran community.
Yellow Cab Co marketing executive Alf Intelisano joined Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett in Bundaberg this week to make the announcement.
Mr Bennett said the initiative was born in response to the shocking number of servicemen and women suffering from mental health illnesses.
He said Sunshine Coast resident Jasmin Carmel initiated the campaign after tragically losing her son, Jarrad, a returned soldier who had served in Afghanistan.
“It is hoped that these stickers, while a simple small gesture, can make a difference to the lives of veterans and their families,” Mr Bennett said.
“The veteran appreciation sticker serves as a daily reminder of the selfless contributions and sacrifice made by members of the defence community. While we can’t pretend to fully comprehend their sacrifice, we can show them that we support them and their families.
“The stickers draw more focus to our service members who have served our country to let them know we are truly grateful and proud of their service.”
Mr Bennett welcomed support from the Yellow Cab Co.
“It’s great to see our cabbies in Bundaberg and across the state getting involved in such an important initiative,” he said.
Mr Bennett said the number of those within the veteran community who were suffering from mental health related issues was alarming.
“Many veterans who I have spoken to say they often find themselves feeling isolated and misunderstood due to post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health related issues,” he said.
“We must find ways to reach out to them and encourage social interaction and offer our reassurance that they are not alone. The appreciation sticker is just one way to show that we do care.”
Mr Bennett said he was determined to see bumper stickers adorned on every single vehicle and shopfront window in the Bundaberg and Burnett region and across the state.
