After two decades, the people of Burrum Heads will finally have access to a safe boat ramp, Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett told State Parliament today.

Mr Bennett said bureaucratic red tape had held up the project, but the future of the controversial boat ramp is more certain after a decision was made to deal with rezoning of the unallocated State Land.

“I welcome today’s notice of motion moved by the Minister to revoke the area described as unallocated state land adjacent to Lions Park within the Burrum River at Burrum Heads,” he said.

“This is a great outcome for the community.

“Not only is the boat ramp going to benefit local boating enthusiasts in the immediate vicinity, but the Fraser Coast region has something like 9,500 registered vessels, not including the tens of thousands of people who visit the region each year.

“Having access to a safe boat ramp with adequate parking is more than a luxury – it’s an essential feature for the township.”

Mr Bennett said it should never have taken 20 years to determine whether the community would get a suitable boat ramp.

Mr Bennett paid tributed to former Maryborough MP Anne Maddern, who had worked hard to push for the $4.5 million project.

“I acknowledge Anne Maddern for making the project a reality. She put in all the groundwork to ensure the community got their boat ramp,” he said.

“I look forward to this ramp being constructed in the immediate future.”
