Local primary schools have been battling it out for the title of the ‘Cleanest Greenest School’, in Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett’s annual waste minimalisation and healthy habits project.

Mr Bennett partnered with the Green Solutions, Bundaberg Fruit and Vegetable Growers, and the Surfing Scientist Ruben Meerman to deliver the Cleaner Greener Schools (CGS) project during Term 3.

The winning school will see a live demonstration from the Surfing Scientist, prizes for every student and the coveted perpetual Turtle Trophy!

Burnett Heads State School has taken home the CGS crown with their beach clean ups, vegetable gardens, community work, compost bins, and reef guardian participation.

Burnett MP Stephen Bennett said it’s up to all of us, both young and old, to help maintain balance within our environment, wildlife, and healthy habits.

“We are lucky to live in paradise here in the Burnett which is why it’s important we all do our part,” he said.

“I have been fortunate to meet some inspiring and remarkably intelligent young people within my electorate who are always inventing new ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.

“This sparked the idea behind the Cleaner Greener Schools Project that is now in its third year.

“The aim was to encourage our community to develop more processes and practices in their daily life to reduce the amount of waste produced and increase our overall health literacy.

“All participating schools have gone above and beyond, but there was one stand out, Burnett Heads State School.

“The teachers and students place an emphasis on caring for and protecting our local environment as well as healthy eating.

“A huge shout out to the teachers who made it all happen and put a lot of time into the project, Suzanne Strachan, Trevor Standfast, and Principal Kirsten Clements who had her last day at the school last week.

“Thank you, Kirsten, for being such an inspiration to the students, we wish you all the best in your next chapter.

“Burnett Heads State School presented several initiatives we can all get behind and I look forward to introducing some at home with my family.”

Eight local schools participated in this year’s project, each submitting a short summary covering how waste reduction and health literacy was accomplished by their school on the completion on the project.

Two schools were named Runner’s Up: Wallaville State School and Discovery Christian College.
