Earlier today, I joined recreational fishers from around the region to campaign for a new boat ramp at Fairymead.
Our local recreational fishers need to re-connect with the Burnett River to help with recovery after the disastrous floods of early this year.
For too long, fishermen have had to drive to Burnett Heads to launch a decent-sized boat. A ramp at Fairymead would get boaties on the north side of the Burnett River back into the water locally. Clearly there’s a need for this issue to be fixed.
President of Moore Park Beach fishing club, Chris Matters is just as frustrated.
For boaties north of the Burnett, access to deep sea fishing grounds with a reasonable size boat is only possible from Burnett Heads.
Some boaties are even driving to Seventeen Seventy to get their boats into the ocean.
It means they face excessive fuel costs to get there, and waste an hour driving to a ramp that can cope with the bigger vessels.
They can’t get convenient ocean access anywhere else; and it’s having an impact on all the fishing clubs who can’t encourage more membership.
This was one of my commitments prior to the election. I’m committed to see this project proceed in my first term as the member for Burnett.
