Schools across the Burnett region have taken action against bullying today on the ninth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA).

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has thrown his support behind the day by donating buddy benches.

Mr Bennett said he has been working with the Bargara Men’s Shed to deliver 10 brand new buddy benches to local schools.

“It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to donate the benches to 10 schools to help eliminate loneliness and encourage inclusive friendships in the playground,” he said.

“Today’s delivery at Avondale State School will bring the total number of benches donated to date up to 20, with another nine going out very soon.

“It’s vital all levels of government, no matter which side you sit on, work together to stamp out bullying.

“This issue is above politics, it’s about doing all that we can to protect our kids.

“As a father and a grandfather, I know the harm that bullying can do to kids.

“It’s a serious issue – bullying is responsible for taking precious young lives.”

Avondale State School Principal Kerry Deighton said they talk to students about what bullying both looks like and feels like.

“Avondale State School, like other schools, works hard with students to help them develop resilience strategies and skills,” she said.

“We talk to them about Bullying, and what they can say or do to help someone else or to help themselves in this type of situation.

“The Buddy Bench will help students on both sides – to identify to others when they are feeling down and also when they have the opportunity to help their fellow students.”
