Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett is urging residents to take part in Get Ready Week with an increased risk of above-average number of tropical cyclones this year.
The Bureau of Meteorology has released their long-range forecast for Australia’s upcoming severe weather season that also includes an increased risk of widespread flooding in eastern and northern Australia.
Mr Bennett said while we can’t control the weather, people can control how they prepare for it and how to respond.
“Everyone can do a little to accomplish a lot in preparation for storm and cyclone season,” he said.
“I call on all Bundaberg and Burnett residents to become involved in Get Ready Week and prepare should the worst of summer hit.
“This is about ensuring every household can weather the storm this summer by planning ahead.
“Don’t wait until a storm is upon you until you decide to get prepared. Now is the time to act.
“This is an opportunity for everyone to take small steps to protect their property, and to assist neighbours with preparations.”
Mr Bennett said there were many things residents could do to prepare, such as compiling a home emergency kit filled with essentials like batteries, drinking water and canned food, and having a family emergency plan every member knows about.
“I also urge anyone with health conditions to ensure they are able to access their medication in the event of severe weather.”
Some simple steps to get ready include:
- Understand your risk
- Prepare a household emergency plan
- Pack an emergency kit
- Clean and prepare the backyard
