Misbehaving motorists will face big fines if caught hooning or breaking the law on local beaches following a string of serious accidents at Coonarr and other local beaches.

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said he’s been calling for tougher consequences and intervention at Kinkuna National Park for years.

“Quite frankly, driving along Connar Beach can be terrifying,” said Mr Bennett.

“It’s a gem of a spot in the Burnett but it’s turned into a lawless area.

“I’ve written numerous letters to the State Labor Government detailing shocking instances of vandalism, reckless driving, and environmental nightmares.

“I’m joined by dozens of people from the small Coonarr community who signed a petition requesting urgent action.

“Finally after years of raising the alarm, the Queensland Park and Wildlife Service will crackdown on reckless behaviour.”

From September 15, Queensland Park and Wildlife Service ranges will have the ability to issue motorists with the same fines as if offences like failing to wear a helmet, a seatbelt or driving without due care, had occurred on roads.

The cost of seatbelt offence issued by QPWS will go from $309 to $1161, a fine for driving without due care and attention will double from $309 to $619 and a helmet offence will go from $309 to $464.

Mr Bennett said it’s a small win to ensure the safety of everyone in the community.

“I love 4WDing as much as the next person, but only when it’s done in a safe and lawful manner,” he said.

“Coonarr Beach has already seen too many tragedies, we simply cannot afford to see another family torn apart by dangerous and reckless behaviour.

“Thank you to everyone who spoke up and shared their experiences.

“It just goes to show the strength of people power and persistence.”
