Member of Burnett, Stephen Bennett, dressed head to toe in pink on Monday to help raise awareness of Walk for Women’s Cancers – an upcoming charity fun-walk held in Bargara for Cancer Council Queensland.
Walk for Women’s Cancers will be held on September 9 from 7am at Neilson Park, Bargara, and aims to raise awareness and funds for local women affected by breast and gynaecological cancers.
The entire community are encouraged to dress in pink and register to walk either 3km or 6km on September 9 to make a difference.
“Cancer touches the lives of many, including thousands of people in our region, so please gather your friends and don some pink to help raise funds and awareness to ensure the Cancer Council can continue its vital work,” Mr Bennett said.
Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan encouraged locals to sign up for the Bundaberg Walk for Women’s Cancers and to give hope to the women in the community affected by cancer.
“Participating in Walk for Women’s Cancers is a great way to show your support for all women affected by cancer,” Ms McMillan said.
“One in six Queensland women are diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancers in their lifetime – these women are our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends.
“Getting involved may seem like a small way to make a difference, but your contribution makes a lasting impact to women touched with cancer.”
In the past 25 years, more than 49,600 Queenslanders have survived a diagnosis of women’s cancer.
“Thanks to advances in treatment options, screening programs and prevention, more Queenslanders are alive today,” Ms McMillan said.
“However, some gynaecological cancers have no screening programs and vague symptoms, making them hard to detect and diagnose.
“This is why we need your help, to help us fund more research and save more women’s lives.
“Walk with us this year at Walk for Women’s Cancers and help us raise funds so we can ensure the women you love have a cancer free future.”
The walk is one of five being held across the state in September, raising funds for Cancer Council Queensland’s work in breast and gynaecological cancers.
All funds raised at Bundaberg Walk for Women’s Cancers help fund Cancer Council Queensland’s work in cancer research, prevention and support.
Locals are invited to register individually or as a team and walk either 3km ($25) or 6km ($30). Under 18s are free. Visit www.walkforwomen.org.au to register or call 1300 65 65 85.
