Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett is calling aspiring young politicians to take a seat in Queensland’s Parliament House, with applications for the YMCA Youth Parliament program closing soon.

People aged 15 to 25 will have the opportunity to rub shoulders with MP’s and experience the parliamentary process first-hand.

Mr Bennett said youth parliament was a great opportunity for young people to stand up and speak up on behalf of their community.

“It’s an opportunity for our youth to have their voices heard and to start real and meaningful conversations about issues and concerns affecting young people in our region,” he said.

“Each year the program brings together 93 young people, representing each electorate in the state.

“It aims at developing debating, negotiating and leadership skills and participants then put these skills to the test at Parliament House in Brisbane in September.

“Youth Members get an insider’s look at what it’s like to be a parliamentarian, learning about parliamentary rules, writing bills and debating them in the parliamentary chamber.

“YMCA’s Youth Parliament has a strong history of empowering young people to take up challenges to become leaders of the future.

“I’ve had the privilege of being involved in previous youth parliaments and it’s great to see the enthusiasm and excitement of all the young people who get involved.”

Nominations for the 27th Youth Parliament close on February 20, and Queenslanders aged 15-25 years with an interest in influencing change, political science, public speaking and policy or government are encouraged to apply.

Participants in Years 11 and 12 are also eligible to receive one point towards their Queensland Certificate of Education upon the completion of their term as a Youth Member, as the program is accredited by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority.
