Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has welcomed the Federal Government’s commitment to keeping our kids safe in the water, but he’s still waiting on action from Labor.
Mr Bennett said it’s fantastic to see the Commonwealth commit to the Save Our Schoolkids (SOS) campaign but it’s high time we follow suit at a state level.
“The safety of our kids is paramount,” Mr Bennett said.
“It’s more than disappointing to watch Labor continue to drag their feet on an issue that could potentially save young lives,
“If we can see the Federal Government demand access to basic swimming and water safety education for all children, why can’t the Palaszczuk Government make the same commitment?
“It’s terrifying to realise how close we are to spring, when almost a third of all drowning deaths occur in Australia.
“Action needs to be taken by Labor, this is a life and death matter.”
The Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report 2017 found the number of children who lack the swimming and water safety skills was a major concern.
The report is also pushing to see a National Action Plan roll out to keep our kids safe in the water.
