“More social housing must be fast tracked immediately because vulnerable Queenslanders don’t have roofs over their head.

This week is National Homelessness Week and it’s more important than ever we raise awareness around people experiencing homelessness, the issues they face, and the action needed to achieve long-lasting solutions.

One of these solutions is real State Government investment in social housing.

The very-high need waitlist in Queensland has blown out by a staggering 80% in the past 18 months due to poor planning and a lack of consultation.

Queenslanders are at breaking point and severe housing shortages are worsening.

In the past year the State Government has sold 207 properties, only built 298 homes with 26,000 Queenslanders waiting for a home.

Do the maths, Queenslanders are losing.

Homelessness can affect anyone and does not discriminate—from single young people to families with children.

Right now more than 1,500 people are experiencing homelessness in the Wide Bay and there are fears this number will continue to rise unless urgent action is taken.

I’m calling on the State Labor Government to re-evaluate their priorities, fix their strategy and fast track more social housing.”
