The Burnett Electorate Office team were keen to get involved in the Legal Walk, raising vital funds to help the vulnerable in our community.

Bundaberg lawyers and local identities swapped their suits and ties for gym shorts and joggers to take part in the inaugural 2016 Bargara Legal Walk this morning.

The walk was part of a state-wide fundraising effort to help ensure vulnerable community members have access to the legal system when they most need it.

Several Bundaberg and Bargara law firms, along with representatives from the Public Trustee of Queensland and Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett took to Bargara’s foreshore early this morning in aid of the fundraiser.

An event spokesperson said around $1,500 was raised locally, taking the state-wide total to $81,000, which will assist the Queensland Public Interest Law Clearing House to continue coordinating pro bono legal services to disadvantaged people in the community.

Local organisations such as Taylor Street Community Legal Centre and the Bundaberg Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service are set to benefit from the funds raised.

Mr Bennett congratulated the local law fraternity for coming together to remove the barriers to justice that reinforce poverty and exclusion.

“I commend our local legal fraternity for joining forces to support vulnerable people in our community,” he said.

Miller Street Law was awarded the top local fundraising team, having raised more than $400 towards the cause.

The fundraising page will stay open for a further two weeks at www.qldlegalwalk.org.au.
