The Deepwater community has joined forces with a veteran-led global disaster response organisation to help clean up one of the hardest hit properties following the 2018 bushfires.

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said the recovery process around the Deepwater and Baffle Creek region is a long one but it’s being made a lot easier thanks to a dedicated community and Team Rubicon Australia.

“They are simply an amazing group of people,” said Mr Bennett.

“Time and time again over the last month I’ve seen this community band together to help each other out.

“Now they have the help of Team Rubicon’s trained volunteers who have been hard at work in the region since Boxing Day.

“Today they began the huge and emotional process of cleaning up a property in Deepwater that was severely damaged at the end of last year.

“But the more hands the better, with plenty of community members working alongside Team Rubicon today.”

Team Rubicon’s Director of Capability Adam Moss said they didn’t know what to expect when they arrived in Deepwater.

“From our experience in both war and peace time operations we have developed the ability to connect with the great Aussie battler because just like us they have to make do with what they have,” he said.

“Everyone in TRA has a unique background and skillset but we do have one very special quality: it is our desire to serve above self.

“As veterans and emergency responders we come equipped into the disaster space with a high level of resilience and selflessness.”

Wartburg Rural Fire Brigade First Officer Judy Ferrari said it’s about lending each other a hand.

“For all those who wanted to help and give assistance to those devastated by the Deepwater fires, this was the perfect opportunity to work alongside Team Rubicon in a truly meaningful way,” she said.
