Between 2014 and 2018 Australia will commemorate the Anzac Centenary, marking 100 years since our nation’s involvement in the First World War.
The Newman Government today committed $49.3 million over five years to support projects, commemoration events and re-enactments around the State over the four years.
The funding, along with $11.8 million of in-kind support, will recognise those who have served and sacrificed for their country in major conflicts.
The Anzac Centenary is a milestone of special significance to all Australians.
The Anzac Centenary will be one of the most significant commemorations to take place in our lifetime.
During the Anzac Centenary we will remember not only the original Anzacs who served at Gallipoli and the Western Front, but commemorate more than a century of service by Australian servicemen and women.
The Anzac Centenary Program encompasses all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations in which Australians have been involved.
The program aims to give all Australians the opportunity to honour the service and sacrifice of all those who have worn our nation’s uniform, including the more than 102,000 who have made the supreme sacrifice.
It also aims to encourage all Australians to reflect upon and learn more about Australia’s military history, its costs and its impacts on our nation.
The Anzac Commemoration Program will provide for legacy projects that will endure beyond the centenary.
The $49.3 million consists of:
- $26.4 million for Anzac legacy projects
- $9.4 million for key commemorative events, such as ANZAC Day 2015
- $13.5 million for the community grants program.
The Government has already shown its dedication to the Anzac tradition promising $1 million at the election to send 50 students to Anzac Cove and the Western Front”, Mr Bennett said. “It’s appropriate that we also provide a level of support that allows this commemoration to be marked appropriately.”
