People with a spinal injury will benefit from $2.2 million in funding from the Newman Government for home modifications as part of the Spinal Cord Injury Response (SCIR).

Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett said LifeTec Queensland would receive the funding to deliver private home modifications for up to 75 people over 18 months to help them discharge from the Spinal Injuries Unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

“Rehabilitation from a spinal cord injury can be a long and difficult process for people and their families,” Mr Bennett said.

“This is a service that will help people with a spinal cord injury move back to their own homes, to their families and communities sooner.

“Spinal cord injuries can happen to anyone.

“Having the right support available ensures that people with spinal cord injuries can live full and meaningful lives.”

In 2012-13, the Newman Government will provide a total of more than $5 million for the Spinal Cord Injury Response to deliver specialist equipment, home modifications, accessible housing and personal care and support to help people with a spinal cord injury rebuild their lives.

Mr Bennett said the government was committed to helping people with spinal injuries return to home from hospital as soon as possible.

“We as a government will partner with community organisations and the non-government sector to assist people with spinal injuries in their transition from acute care and hospital rehabilitations back to community living,” she said.

“LifeTec has an impressive 30-year history of successfully providing specialist advice, assessment and home modifications to residents across Queensland.”

LifeTec Queensland will partner with National Disability Living Solutions (NDLS), a statewide specialist building and modification organisation to deliver the program.
