Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett is asking residents to ditch the gifts this year and give up a little time.

As the year comes to an end, Christmas and gift giving is front of mind for many, but it’s important we remember to give back said Mr Bennett.

“I’ve been doing 12 days of giving; volunteering time at a number of local groups and organisations,” he said.

“It’s just a small way we can give back to our community and I’m encouraging everyone to do the same.”

“Your time is the best gift you can give in a lot of cases and a smile is often the best reward.”

Mr Bennett said a huge shout out must go out to all our Emergency Service Volunteers.

“They are the epitome of giving,” he said.

“These volunteers have been pushed to the limit recently with the devastating bushfires and they deserve a huge thanks for all that they do.”

Bundaberg Salvation Army Captain Chris Millard said Christmas is not all about the stuff, but it’s about what we do with our time.

“Too often we think that it’s the price of a toy that shows how much we love someone,” said Mr Millard.

“It doesn’t matter how much money you spend, it’s about how much time you give to someone.

“Time is one of our greatest expenses so let’s spread it around this year.

“There’s always an opportunity for people to give their time at the Salvo’s and we’re always welcoming volunteers.”
